BACKGROUND

Type VIIA “Wolf Class” K-Boats were the most common type of Alemannia anti-commerce capital ships. K-boat stands for Kette, which means Warp in Alemannian.

K-boat is the anglicised version of the Alemannia word K-Boot, a shortening of Ketteboot, literally “warp boat”. This refers specifically to military attack boats operated by Alemannia, particularly in the Fourth and Fifth Interstellar Wars.

Although at times they were efficient fleet weapons against enemy capital warships, they were most effectively used in an economic warfare role (commerce raiding), enforcing a interstellar blockade against enemy commerce. The primary targets of the K-boat campaigns in both wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from the rest of the galaxy to the Albion and Orlesian empires that were under attack.

During the 5th Interstellar War, K-boat warfare was the major component of the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted the duration of the war. Alemannia had the largest warp fleet in the war, since the Treaty of Hamman ending the Fourth Interstellar War had limited the regular interstellar navy of Alemannia to sixteen battleships (of less than 300,000 tons each), twelve cruisers, and 18 destroyers. Prime Minister Martin Hillsborough wrote “The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the K-boat peril.”

In the early stages of the war the K-boats were extremely effective in destroying Alliance shipping. The trade in war supplies and food across the the interstellar reaches was extensive, which was critical for Albion’s survival.

These ships were incredibly expensive compared to standard ship of the line models, however their price seemed to be worth it after just the first decade of fighting.
